Meeting Dr. Abraham Verghese - Director of National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Insects

Yesterday was a very unique day as it was completely unplanned meet but turned out to be one of the best so far. How does a software developer get to meet head of NBAII? Well, it all started when I had proposed in front of few big shots (ahem) of my organization that we should present ourselves in demojam held at TechEd Bangalore. It was a big and sometimes heated discussion. I don't know what clicked but after several rounds of discussion the team agreed that we could not focus entirely on marketability of idea at the moment. At my current position, I sometimes am not able to understand why people much up the hierarchy focus on sellability of whatever we do. That makes sense to an extent but it make things delayed to get started at first place. I remember I had to write that we could first focus on doing and then remodeling what we do to meet their expectations. This itself is a huge topic of discussion under 'Different People' category but since that's not the intention of this blog I'd not discuss that here.

Things moved and process moved from 'why' to 'what'. There were many brainstorming sessions held with different ideas. Many got rejected as they were too sophisticated to get implemented with resources at hand. One of the team members has little exposure to agricultural concept because of close family relationships working in that area. Thoughts were diverted in that direction and after few meetings it was finalized that demo would be done in that area. Finally the team found few other team members whose close family members are in that area to better identify problems there. Things moved and to get a clear exposure to the concept and clarify our doubts, a meeting was organized with Dr. Abraham Verghese. Appointment was from 3:30 pm to 4:00pm.

We went there well before time and had to wait for close to 40 mins. The team was greeted well inside the big room of Dr. Verghese. I was a little surprised to see Dr. Verghese's humbled behaviour by holding the door until we all entered, though he had his assistant! We were seated and the discussion started. He had a completely calm and composed attitude. This was one such meeting wherein I just wanted to listen, listen and listen more! Each of his sentences had a heavy weight. He said that no farmer in India is poor because of production issues, it is all because of storage and distribution problems. He suggested that if we could do something for storage and distribution of perishable food products, that would be good. He was talking about the network set up of the transportation and storage of crops among different locations.
He said that the crop production capability of India has increased more than 6 times post independence. There is appropriate food produced for everyone in this country. But since there are gaps between production, distribution and reachability to the masses, the lack appears.

He also mentioned that there are middle men involved who helps farmers to get their production from farms to markets. In older times, these middle people were viewed with little skepticism but are now treated as facilitators. He has done many researches which are being used around the world. He highligted few examples where his deparment has helped solve bio-terrorism. In some year, there was an insect imported from another country which caused papayas to rot and hence causing huge damage to the many farmers many of whose income depends entirely on papaya production. They had to analyse the insect causing the damage, identify the country it was imported from and then propose the solution. The solution was interesting. No spray could help solve the problem. They had to import natural agents to destroy the insects from the same country. This process had to be quick and not take much time. His other example was that of mangoes which too were getting destroyed because of imported insects. He had done research and proposed the solution which is now being used at many countries around the world.

There was a similar example with eucalyptus which if damaged would cause paperless India. Thereby he also emphasized the need of  evolution in 'quarantine' process. Few of his other examples highlighting areas of improvement in India couldn't stop me from laughing.

All in all I had a great experience meeting him. I have also started to conclude that all amazing people have one quality in common - power of listening. He listened to all of us as if we all made great sense to him but I could make out very well that he was much beyond and above us. Seeing his calm behaviour I couldn't resist thinking about my own dad who is just the same. I was not much surprised when even calm people like him end up cracking jokes on me. While leaving us till door, he asked me where am I from and then said that he visits my state frequently and I would not have an iota of knowledge about the agricultural importance of my place. I said that if both of us are there at the same time I would certainly meet him again.

Things have moved good so far. I don't know if we would be able to submit our entry in the time required but trying causes no harm. I always feel that while doing any such extra work apart from regular day job, someone in the team has to be hyperactive to keep things moving. I did that in the last Innojam I participated. I would like to do that again but time management becomes little difficult when you are at the age of handling additional personal responsibilities.

Fashion trends in New Delhi Vs Bangalore

Delhi and Bangalore are considered to be among the most hep and happening places of India along with few other cities certainly. I am always intrigued by the difference between the two places in terms of fashion trends which is actually huge according to me. Hyderabad is not included in the list as I could not much enjoy my stay in Hyderabad. There would be no mention of cities like Chennai or Pune as I do not have much idea of these places. Ranking that I have added in my blog is per some article that I read sometime back.

Mumbai ranks first in fashion. Dresses of the newly released bollywood movies would be seen worn by ladies as soon as possible or even before the movie releases. At the same time Mumbai is very costly city. Shopkeepers have to keep the trendy clothes per fashion to remain in the business. Not much of my thoughts for this city.

Delhi is an amazing place, barring its extreme climate as is mentioned in a bollywood song ye Delhi ha mere yaar. One night in summer when I did not switch on A.C and decided to sleep only under fan, I found myself sweating. Delhi, supposedly ranks second in fashion. I agree with this research result very much. The fashion moves very fast  here. I visited the same shops last year and found good amount of differently designed dresses this year. Another attraction of Delhi in terms of fashion is, one get dresses currently in fashion at pretty much low costs compared to Bangalore for the same dress. One need not visit malls, Centrals etc. to get them, rather most of them are available at small shops. I am generally hesistant in visiting open market places for no specific reason, but in Delhi with my family I do not have any hesitation.

Ladies are very fast in identifying the current trend including my nieces and implement it much faster. I very much choose my dresses according to the trend and seeing others (copy-cat). The city looks colourful with people wearing colourful dresses especially gals. Whenever I visit Delhi, my shopping spirit is at its peak as I know I would get the latest at the best price. Same is called as Sasta, Sundar, Tikau as slang in Hindi.

Generally taking photographs at these crowded places is prohibited in Delhi, thanks to terrorists! I took permission from these vendors and captured these

I had chance to visit Sarojini Nagar as well, one of the most crowded shopping places of Delhi. No photos allowed, so we just clicked outside the market area.

I did some cool shopping from this market and am very happy.

Feeling is different in Bangalore. I do not know of any shopping places apart from malls, centrals, shopper stop etc. I feel people are not as updated and passionate about changing fashion trends as in Delhi. In fact Bangalore follows Delhi in fashion. Dresses I find now in Delhi would come to Bangalore after few weeks or may be a month or likewise. Brand, Brand and Brand is the only thing that comes to my mind while buying dresses in Bangalore. However I am happy with them too. The article that I read ranked Bangalore to be the third in fashion trends much in accordance with my views.....hehehe...

Chimney climbing Vs Life!

It may sound weird when I compare chimney climbing/rappelling or rock climbing with our own lives but there are striking resemblances. When I tried rappelling, there was a minor accident and I had circled around the rock and fell back on the top but was pretty safe and then I was so scared that the guide had to actually cajole me to do again and I was good. Now there are many situations wherein we face minor setbacks and need to regain momentum either from the virtue of self-motivation or a guide (in case you are lucky to have one). I rely more on self-motivation. This activity was actually very enriching wherein I learnt to take care of myself. No amount of external support could help us until we help ourselves and when we help ourselves we tend to get unforeseen support from unforeseen sources/forces.
[Everything looks far unless you try it yourself]

The next activity was chimney climbing on the same day or 3rd March 2012. It required participants to lift their own weight by properly balancing themselves with the help of legs on a wall while resting their bum on the opposite wall. Absolutely thrilling! I remember I moved little up and asked the guide if I could come back to which he immediately replied 'Going up is easy, coming down is hard'. Same do I feel in life. When we start taking little steps towards our dreams we raise ourselves and then enter into risky situations wherein all of a sudden expectations rises sky high but then we cannot come down and be again the unknown self. Similar is the suggestion given by Lord Krishna to Arjuna in Bhagavad Gita when he said "You can't run away from the battle ground else you would be demeaned by future generations, highly against your current dignity". Who would want this? Lord also said that only lucky people get the opportunity to be part of such wars.  Every war/obstacle is an opportunity indirectly, depends on the way we take it. I need to imbibe this. [Sorry, no photos here]
Next activity was boulder climbing. A relatively hefty man was not able to climb up :) or rather take the first step  to get the grip of the boulder. The guide said, taking the first step is most difficult. He also guided by saying there are different points in the boulder which are better for a good grip and balance ourselves while climbing up. He said keep finding those points and move up. Easy to be correlated to our life. We cannot move in the same way as the world is changing very fast and we should be able to go with it else I would categorize the person to be highly incompetent. We should be able to find those points which can really help us with our dreams. I think I am myself learning while writing, hehe!
[I climb up as the guide in red T-shirt watches]

After all these laborious activities we were happy to have a water activity which certainly was not fun for me as I don't know swimming :(

We were served lunch and after a break we were sent out for trekking. I rested wherever possible.
All in all the day turned out to be very insightful and enriching.

UB city, Bangalore - 27th May 2012

I had the chance to visit UB city, Bangalore this past weekend. The day was pleasant and very much enjoyable. It was not very crowded on that day owing to the fact that it was IPL finals on the same day. The place gave me a soothing feeling but failed to please my chirpy self. There were lot of foreigners and executives there. I think Mr. Mallaya has succeeded in making a high-profile mall but has failed to gain the attention of young people who want hangouts at affordable places as in Forum mall and likewise.
I liked the coffee place which had a guitarist too for entertaining the crowd with assuaging Hollywood songs.

I have realized that I really do not need someone by my side to enjoy such romantic moments as I can get lost in my thoughts and feel good, much to the embarrassment of the partner I go with!

I am very impressed with the shops there as they had some very cool dresses and shoes but that goes along with their impressive costs :) .
There were some amazing and rare seen cars parked in the parking area like Ferrari...
Nothing much to say if one could think in the same lines as I am thinking about India. (Be careful as it's both positive and negative)
